Othell Yarwyck

Othell Yarwyck serves as the First Builder of the Night's Watch, a position that places him in charge of construction and maintenance at Castle Black and along the Wall. He is a man of limited imagination and taciturn nature, whose counsel to Lord Commander Jon Snow is invariably negative and obstructive. Yarwyck's primary concern is the practical difficulty of the work, and he habitually complains about the lack of skilled masons and the poor quality of the free folk as laborers, dismissing them as "sloppy, careless, lazy" and asserting that the task of restoring the ruined forts "can't be done" [E08996].

Role and Attitude

Yarwyck is a member of Jon Snow's inner council, alongside Bowen Marsh, but he provides no constructive solutions. When Jon proposes settling wildling chiefs at abandoned castles, Yarwyck's response is to list the men as "bad and worse and worst" and compare them to wolves that would tear out the Watch's throats [E09003]. He is equally dismissive of the plan to rescue the starving free folk at Hardhome, suggesting that Tormund Giantsbane should go alone, as he boasts he can save everyone with his "huge member" [E09007].

Opposition to Jon Snow

Yarwyck's opposition to Jon's policies is consistent and unyielding. He sides with Bowen Marsh in objecting to the admission of wildlings through the Wall, the garrisoning of empty forts, and the ranging to Hardhome. When Jon announces his intention to ride south to confront Ramsay Bolton, Yarwyck and Marsh are the first to slip out of the Shieldhall, signaling their rejection of the Lord Commander's plan [E09073]. His narrow focus on the immediate, physical impossibilities of the Watch's situation makes him a foil to Jon's broader strategic vision, but his lack of imagination also renders him incapable of offering any alternative path forward.
